The best job you can have in 2019 is being a growth marketer.
I’ve been a growth marketer for 10 years in NYC and San Francisco.
I’ve spoken to hundreds of people on both coasts, and almost no one likes their job except me AND the people I meet with a job in growth marketing.

What is a growth marketer?
Growth marketing is an increasingly popular marketing discipline, particularly in the startup world.
The term “growth marketing” covers a lot of techniques and tactics, all designed to grow businesses quickly and efficiently.
Why growth marketing is the best job you can have in 2019.
Ever since I became a growth marketer I have been prancing around the office with a big smile on my face. I promise — you can ask anyone who knows me. At our office holiday party I won the award “Most Likely to Be Smiling”, and that was definitely not the case when I was in account management or teaching in the Bronx.
Here’s why being a growth marketer is the best job you can have today…
1. It’s the most important job.
When I launched my first startup, I learned this lesson the hard way:
“You can have the perfect product and an incredible team, but if you don’t know how to get customers, then you have no business.”
Many companies make the mistake of leaving “marketing” until the very end, as an after thought.
They raise millions of dollars in funding, spend years building a product, without having any idea how they’re going to get customers when it’s all said and done.
This continues to boggle my mind. It’s the biggest mistake you can make. A company can’t make any money if it doesn’t have customers. And if it doesn’t have any money, it won’t be around for very long.
As a growth marketer, you will learn how to bring customers to any business. You will possess the super power to make any business grow.
2. It’s rewarding.
Being a growth marketer is super rewarding. That’s because there is a clear link between your work and the company’s success.
You get to come up with creative ideas for marketing campaigns, and if your ideas work and drive customers to the business, you get all the credit for it!
Everyone at the company will love you and thank you when you’re generating leads, non-stop, for your business.
The sales team is happy because they have leads to call on. The CEO is happy because revenue is growing. You’re happy because it feels good to get recognition for the work that you do.
3. It’s fun, like playing a game.
Being a growth marketer is fun. To me, it’s like a game.
Here’s how the game works: You’re trying to win the game of getting more customers, and lowering the CPA (cost per acquisition).
Every morning, you come into the office to check on your score.
When you’re winning, it’s so much fun. Customers are rolling in and it’s all because you had a great idea to try this ad or this platform or this tactic, and now it’s working and you’re winning the game.
When you’re losing, it’s still fun, because now you get to think strategically of what you can change, or optimize or try to increase conversion rates. A/B testing, making tweaks, iterating, until you find that ah-ha moment where you find something that works.
4. The pay is unlimited.
Your starting salary will vary depending on where you live in the world. According to Indeed, the starting salary for a growth marketer in the U.S. is $85,278.
Move to where I live in San Francisco and that goes up to $114,545.
If you think that sounds good — get this: once you develop your skills, the sky is the limit.
Let me explain why…
There is a direct link between the work you do and the revenue your company brings in. As long as you’re good at your job, this will work out in your favor.
If your marketing efforts are bringing in millions of revenue for your business, you will have powerful leverage to negotiate for a higher salary.
I know CMOs in San Francisco who are making over $400,000 a year.
But, the truth is, the BEST marketers in the industry aren’t employees at a company at all. The best growth marketers have long ago quit their jobs to grow their own business for themselves.
Once you know how to drive millions in revenue for a business, you’re going to want to put your energy into growing a lucrative business for yourself.
5. The skills are transferable.
Once you know some marketing tactics that work well, you will be able to apply them to any business and make it grow!
That’s the beauty here. The more you know, and the more companies you can help grow.
This is a skill that every company needs, and now you have it.
You might be thinking: “How can I prove I am a good growth marketer and convince a company to hire me?”
The good news is: it’s very easy to measure whether or not you have this skill. All you have to do is quantify your efforts. Help a company grow from ____ to ____ using _____ marketing tactic and add it to your resume.
6. It’s easy to learn
Marketing is not rocket science. It’s easy to learn how to do growth marketing on the internet.
I majored in psychology in college and got a masters in education and now I do growth marketing.
I was able to make this switch by putting in a little effort to self-educate.
- I read marketing blog posts and books
- Joined marketing groups on Facebook
- Attended marketing events and conferences
- Went for coffee with marketing experts
I was able to gather a LOT of information that way, but if you want a short cut, you can register for my Growth Hacking Masterclass.
However, in order to get real-life experience, I needed to practice these growth hacks and tactics in the real world.
So you know what I did? I started helping my mom with her real estate business and my brother with his tutoring business for medical school students. I offered to help them for free, in my spare time.
As a result, I was able to practice the marketing tactics and create my first case studies.
My mom’s business began to generate leads on auto-pilot, and the same for my brothers tutoring company. And now I was able to share this success with future employers as I interviews for a job in growth marketing.
You don’t need to go to business school in order to get a job as a growth marketer. You just need to learn some tactics and start practicing.
7. It is creative and analytical.
One thing that many people don’t realize is that marketing as a discipline has changed tremendously in the past 10 years.
Many people think marketing is fluffier than it actually is.
They think marketing as a creative role, and in many ways it is — creating visuals for ads, designing the website, the brand and the messaging. But what they don’t realize, is how analytical the role has become.
As the world becomes increasingly digital, we are able to track every click and every dollar. This creates a ton of interesting data about our marketing efforts and about our customers. However, pulling actionable insights from this data requires significant analytical skills.
To be a very successful growth marketer, you must possess both creativity and an analytical mindset.
Now if you’re not great with numbers, have no fear. I was terrified of math and excel when I was first getting started.
But with the right tools and information, you can definitely learn what it takes to create the perfect marketing dashboard to track your marketing data correctly and build informative marketing reports for your team.
8. It creates a clear path to self-employment.
If you become an expert growth marketer, it won’t be long before you’re working for yourself.
That’s because the incredible secrets that you are going to learn are so powerful, you will want to use them to grow a business that is 100% yours rather than working for someone else.
There are many ways you can work for yourself as a growth marketer:
- You can take any idea, hire people on Fiverr to build it, and grow that idea into a business with your growth marketing skills.
- You can build a profile on Fiverr and become a marketing consultant, charging anywhere from $65-$300 per hour.
- You can sell other people’s products by become an affiliate. Here at Growth Marketing Pro, we’ve built a 6-figure passive income business by doing this. Learn how we’re making $90,648 this year for recommending one software tool to our readers.
Maybe I’m biased, but I think being a growth marketer is the best job in the world. I feel lucky to have found my calling. I hope this helps you find yours!
